Oil Seals

At Anchor Seals Inc., we have a large selection of radial lip oil seals in stock and ready to ship to help ensure consistent and reliable performance of your rotating equipment.

Radial lip oil seals keep lubricant in and contamination out of bearing housings on pumps, motors, gearboxes, rolls, and fans. Anchor Seals Inc. stocks external, face-type, and split oil seals in metal case and reinforced rubber OD designs covering shaft diameters from 0.750 inch to 120 inches.

Split seal styles install without removing bearings, couplings, or the shaft, which keeps repairs on large steel mill, paper machine, and power plant equipment to hours instead of days. The tables below list each model's description, shaft range, allowable misalignment and runout by surface speed, pressure rating, and spring configuration. Face Oil Seals

Face-type excluder seals that run against a perpendicular surface rather than the shaft. Flexible lips maintain continuous contact in high-speed service.

Split Oil Seals

Install without pulling the shaft, bearings, or coupling. Reverse bevel lips prevent rollover, reinforced rubber ODs seat in the groove, and most styles use a cover plate.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a radial lip oil seal?

A radial lip seal, also called a shaft seal or oil seal, is a flexible elastomer lip held against a rotating shaft by a garter or finger spring. It keeps lubricant inside the bearing housing and keeps dirt, water, and process contamination out. The seal body is either a metal case pressed into the housing bore or a reinforced rubber OD that seats in a groove or under a cover plate.

What is the difference between external, face, and split oil seals?

External seals mount around the outside of the housing and seal against the shaft OD, typically in an assembled metal case design. Face seals seal axially against a perpendicular surface rather than radially against the shaft and are used as excluders in high-speed service. Split seals are cut so they can be installed without removing bearings, couplings, or the shaft, which makes them the fastest repair option on large equipment.

When should I choose a split seal over a solid seal?

Choose a split seal whenever disassembling the equipment to install a solid seal would cost more in downtime than the seal itself. Split designs are standard on large shafts in steel mills, paper machines, and power plants where pulling a shaft is a major job. Most split styles require a cover plate to hold the seal in the housing.

What does misalignment and runout at fpm mean?

It is the maximum total shaft misalignment or dynamic runout, in inches, that the seal lip can follow at a given surface speed in feet per minute. Higher speeds leave less time for the lip to follow the shaft, so the allowable runout drops as fpm rises. Match your shaft speed and measured runout to the table to confirm a style will track properly.

What shaft sizes can Anchor Seals Inc. supply?

Stocked radial lip styles cover shaft diameters from 0.750 inch up to 120 inches, and the Model 23 split seal alone is available in more than 300,000 sizes. Send us the shaft diameter, bore diameter, and groove or housing width and we will match a model.

Are oil seals in stock and ready to ship?

Yes. Anchor Seals Inc. keeps a large in-stock selection of radial lip oil seals ready to ship so that a failed seal does not turn into an extended outage. Contact us for immediate availability on a specific size.
