Carbon Graphite Fiber Packing
INTER-LOCK braided carbon and graphite yarn packings for boiler feed pumps, high speed shafts, valve stems, and reciprocating rods. Rated from -200°F to +650°F in atmosphere and +1200°F in steam, with pH 0 to 14 chemical resistance.
Carbon and graphite fiber packings handle the services that wear out conventional yarns: high temperature, high shaft speed, and aggressive chemistry across the full pH range. The carbon yarn carries heat away from the shaft while graphite lubricant keeps friction low, so the packing runs cooler and protects the sleeve.
Anchor Seals Inc. stocks four carbon graphite styles. Styles 1332 and 1342 are the workhorses for pumps and valves, 1328 adds PTFE for chemical service and fast start-up, and 1343 is the pure graphite filament end ring specified by the power generation industry. Pre-cut rings and kits are available for any shaft and bore.
Four Styles, One Braid
Why Carbon Graphite Packing
INTER-LOCK braid construction on every style for strength and even compression.
Carbon yarn conducts heat away from the shaft for cooler running.
Graphite and high temperature lubricants keep friction low and reduce leakage.
Non-abrasive and non-fraying so shafts and sleeves last longer.
Style 1343 pure graphite end rings pair with Style 15-TR die formed rings for critical valves.

| Style # | Description | Construction | Service | Temperature | pH | Shaft Speed | Pressure (psig) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1332 | Manufactured from a quality carbon yarn impregnated throughout with a special lubricant which reduces leakage through the packing. Incorporates particles of pure graphite and a high temperature lubricant for applications operating under severe conditions. | INTER-LOCK Braid | Boiler feed pumps; rotary shafts on pumps, agitators, mixers, crystallizers, filters, and continuous digesters; reciprocating rods on pumps; valve stems; slip-type expansion joints; floating heads on heat exchangers. |

| 1342 | Manufactured from pure graphite thoroughly impregnated with a micronized graphite lubricant in INTER-LOCK braid with less chloride content for extreme cooling. Possesses excellent temperature and chemical resistance for valves and high speed pumps. Lubricated with a high temperature resistant colloidal graphite. | INTER-LOCK Braid | Valves and high speed pumps in high temperature and chemical service, including boiler feed, condensate, and process pumps. |

0-14 | 4000+ fpm | 500 |
| 1328 | Carbon fiber packing impregnated with PTFE and treated with a fast start-up lubricant. Tough, but offers low abrasion. Excellent non-contaminating carbon packing. | INTER-LOCK Braid | Centrifugal pumps, reactors, agitators, hydro-electric turbines, gate, globe, ball, and valve stems, slip-type expansion joints, mixers, and autoclaves. | -200°F to +600°F | 0-14 | 2200-2400+ fpm | 500 |
| 1343 | Designed for valve stem and reciprocating services, this packing has been tested and successfully meets the difficult specifications required by the power generation industry. No PTFE or lubricants added, only graphite dispersion, makes this the purest of graphite filament yarn packing. Totally non-abrasive, does not fray, plus a very low coefficient of friction. | INTER-LOCK Braid | Ideal for most critical valve applications; to be used as end rings only. Recommend using with Style 15-TR die formed rings. |

Frequently Asked Questions
All Mechanical PackingsWhat is the difference between carbon and graphite packing?
Carbon yarn is stronger and more abrasion resistant, so it is used where the packing has to hold up mechanically, such as reciprocating rods and boiler feed pumps. Graphite yarn is softer, more conformable, and more chemically inert, so it excels in valves and high speed pumps. Styles 1332 and 1328 are carbon based; 1342 and 1343 are graphite based.
Why is the steam rating higher than the atmosphere rating?
Carbon and graphite oxidize in the presence of oxygen at high temperature. In a steam environment there is little free oxygen, so the yarn survives to +1200°F. In open atmosphere the practical limit is +650°F.
When should I use Style 1343 end rings?
Style 1343 contains no PTFE or lubricants, only pure graphite filament yarn, which is why the power generation industry specifies it. It is meant to be used as top and bottom end rings around Style 15-TR die formed graphite rings in critical valves, not as a full set on its own.
Can these packings run on high speed pumps?
Yes. Style 1342 is rated to 4000+ fpm and Style 1332 to 3000+ fpm. The carbon and graphite construction conducts heat away from the shaft, which is what allows those speeds. Confirm with our engineers for shaft speeds above the listed limits.
