Fabric Packing and Rubber Packing
Laminated cotton duck and rubber packings for hydraulic pistons, reciprocating rods, low pressure steam, and slow speed equipment. Multi-ply construction, no graphite contamination, and rated to 500 psig.
Fabric and rubber packings are built by treating tightly woven cotton duck with rubber compounds, forming it into plies, and vulcanizing the plies into a solid, resilient packing. The result is a tough, dimensionally stable packing for hydraulic and reciprocating service where a braided packing would extrude or wear.
Anchor Seals Inc. stocks two laminated styles. Style 340 is a white cotton and natural rubber hydraulic packing offered in regular and rock hard cures with no graphite contamination. Style 225 is a heavyweight duck and SBR rubber packing lubricated with graphite and mineral oil for low pressure steam rods and slow speed hydraulic equipment.
Two Laminated Styles
Why Fabric and Rubber Packing
Strong multi-ply laminated construction resists extrusion in hydraulic and reciprocating service.
Style 340 is free of graphite and packing lubricants, so it will not contaminate the process.
Two cures on Style 340: regular for flexibility, rock hard for temperatures to +250°F.
Style 225 is impregnated with graphite and mineral oil lubricant from top to bottom rubber covers.
Ideal as end rings in rod packing sets and as inside packed piston rings.
Fabric and Rubber Packing Styles
Both styles are laminated duck and rubber. Match the style to your temperature and service. Scroll the table on smaller screens.
| Style # | Description | Construction | Service | Temperature | pH | Shaft Speed | Pressure (psig) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 340 | White cotton fiber hydraulic packing with natural rubber offered in two cures: regular and rock hard. Rock hard cure can withstand temperatures up to 250°F. Hot and cold water heavy-duty hydraulic resistant; strong multi-ply construction; with no contamination by graphite and other packing lubricants. | Laminated | Ideal for any temperature condition involving inside packed pistons, many reciprocating uses, and as end rings in rod packing. | +250°F | 5-9 | N/A | 500 |
| 225 | Duck and rubber packing of extra high quality. Primarily a low temperature, low pressure packing. Tightly woven heavyweight cotton duck is treated with SBR rubber compounds, formed into plies, and vulcanized. Graphite and mineral oil lubricant impregnated from top to bottom rubber covers. | Laminated | Used on low pressure steam rods and plungers, and hydraulic equipment requiring a packing of this type, such as extremely slow speed service. | +220°F | 4-10 | N/A | 500 |

Frequently Asked Questions
All Mechanical PackingsWhat is laminated packing?
Laminated packing is made by treating woven cotton duck with rubber compounds, stacking the treated fabric into plies, and vulcanizing them into a solid block or sheet that is then cut into rings. Unlike braided packing, it has no yarns to fray or extrude, which makes it ideal for hydraulic pistons and reciprocating rods.
What is the difference between regular and rock hard cure on Style 340?
The regular cure is more flexible and easier to install in tight grooves. The rock hard cure is vulcanized to a firmer state that resists extrusion at higher pressure and withstands temperatures up to +250°F.
Why choose Style 340 over a lubricated packing?
Style 340 contains no graphite or packing lubricants, so nothing leaches into the process. It is the right choice for hot and cold water hydraulic service where cleanliness matters or where lubricants would wash out.
Can Anchor Seals Inc. cut these to size?
Yes. Both styles are supplied as pre-cut rings for specific rod, piston, and groove dimensions. Send us the dimensions and the number of rings per set and we will quote a kit.
