Valve Stem Packing

Wire reinforced carbon braids, pure graphite tape and die-formed rings, and graphite filled fiber packings for valve stems, boiler feed pumps, and superheated steam service to 1200°F.

Valve stem packing has to hold pressure with no shaft rotation to help it seat, survive steam temperatures that destroy ordinary yarns, and tolerate worn boxes and stem clearances. Anchor Seals Inc. covers that range with Inconel wire reinforced carbon braids for high pressure stems, expanded graphite tape and die-formed rings for superheated steam, and graphite filled fiber packings for general industrial valves and pumps.

Die-formed Style 15TR sets can be supplied with Belleville disc springs to hold gland load as bolts creep at temperature. Send us the stem diameter, box bore and depth, and service conditions and we will build the set.

Why These Valve Packings

Encapsulated Inconel wire reinforcement holds high stem pressures without extrusion.

Pure expanded graphite tape with no binders, oils, or greases to leave the packing or contaminate the process.

Die-formed 15TR sets seal worn boxes and stem clearances over 0.020 inch.

Belleville disc spring option keeps gland load on the packing as bolts creep at temperature.

Styles 1128 and 1128T for general industrial valves and pumps to 550°F.

Sets assembled to your stem and box dimensions.

Wire Reinforced Carbon Packing

Carbon yarn with encapsulated Inconel wire over a carbon core for high pressure stems and boiler feed pumps.

Style # Description Construction Service Temperature pH Shaft Speed Pressure
(psig)
814 Carbon yarn with encapsulated wire reinforcement braided over a flexible, specially constructed carbon core. INTER-LOCK Braid Boiler feed pumps; rotary shafts on pumps, agitators, mixers, crystallizers, filters, and continuous digesters; reciprocating rods on pumps; valve stems; slip-type expansion joints; floating heads on heat exchangers.

809-GHP Manufactured with a proven high temperature core which, when combined with an outer jacket of carbon yarn and Inconel wire, results in one of the finest valve packings available today. INTER-LOCK Braid Can be used in a wide range of fluids as a result of its 3 to 11 pH range. The versatility of INTER-LOCK packing makes it an excellent choice for steam as well as a multitude of other services.

Graphite Tape, Die-Formed Rings, and Fiber Packing

Pure expanded graphite for superheated steam and worn boxes, plus graphite filled fiber packings for general service.

Style # Description Construction Service Temperature pH Shaft Speed Pressure
(psig)
15 TAPE Ribbon form of extremely pure graphite, with no impregnates, binders, additives, oils, or greases which could leave the packing and reduce its volume or contaminate the process media. Expanded graphite tape, with or without pressure-sensitive adhesive, or smoother finish Often used alone. Can be installed between end rings of INTER-LOCK graphite filament packing (Style 1342).

15TR Die-formed center rings of expanded graphite tape with anti-extrusion end rings of interlock braided graphite yarn. Available with Belleville disc springs providing increased bolt tension and seal pressure when the bolts creep at higher temperatures and are stretched by differential expansion between the gland entry face and bolt. Die-formed expanded graphite tape Useful for applications involving exceptionally high temperatures and pressures, particularly superheated steam, or where the stuffing box is worn or where clearances between the stem and the bottom of the stuffing box exceed 0.020 inch.

1128 Non-asbestos graphite filled fiber packing with excellent heat transfer characteristics and a low friction coefficient. INTER-LOCK Braid Good all-around packing for all general industries. +550°F 0-14 2000 fpm 300
1128T Reinforced yarn that is PTFE impregnated throughout by the Anchor fiber dilation process. Exhibits less leakage, easier start-up, and less contamination. INTER-LOCK Braid Especially suited for pump and valve applications in primary metal, water and waste, pulp and paper, petrochemical, chemical, marine, and mining industries. +550°F 0-14 2000 fpm 300

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

All Mechanical Packings

What makes valve stem packing different from pump packing?

A valve stem does not rotate continuously, so the packing gets no help seating and no cooling from shaft motion. It has to hold pressure statically, survive high temperature steam, and resist extrusion through the stem clearance. That is why valve styles use wire reinforcement, pure graphite, and die-formed rings rather than the softer lubricated yarns used on pumps.

When should I use die-formed 15TR rings instead of tape?

Use 15TR where the box is worn, where the clearance between the stem and the bottom of the box exceeds 0.020 inch, or on superheated steam at exceptionally high pressure. The die-formed center rings are pre-densified so they seal immediately, and the braided end rings stop extrusion. Style 15 TAPE is the choice for field wrapping and for filling between end rings.

What do Belleville disc springs do?

At high temperature, gland bolts creep and the gland and bolts expand at different rates, which loosens the packing. Belleville springs under the gland nuts keep tension on the packing as the bolts relax, so the seal holds between maintenance intervals.

Which style is right for a general industrial valve?

Style 1128 is the all-around graphite filled fiber packing for general industries to 550°F, and Style 1128T adds PTFE impregnation for less leakage, easier start-up, and less contamination in pulp and paper, chemical, and water and waste service. Move to 814 or 809-GHP for high pressure steam.
