Metallic Packing
Twisted lead foil packing for boiler feed pumps and as anti-extrusion end rings in combination sets. Low friction, will not score or wear steel or cast iron rods, shafts, or plungers, and rated to 1500 psig and above.
Metallic packing is built from thin foil twisted or wrapped into a dense, conformable rope. The metal carries heat away from the shaft, holds its shape under high pressure, and acts as an anti-extrusion barrier at the top and bottom of a packing set. Lead foil in particular has a low coefficient of friction, so it seals without scoring the equipment it runs against.
Anchor Seals Inc. stocks Style 811 twisted lead foil for boiler feed pumps and as end rings with braided, flexible graphite, or PTFE body rings. Additional metallic constructions, including foil over cores and aluminum or copper foils, are available on request.
Style 811 at a Glance
Why Metallic Packing
Twisted lead foil construction with no core, so the whole cross section is sealing material.
Low friction: will not score or wear steel or cast iron rods, shafts, or plungers.
Superior boiler feed pump packing where pressure and heat wear out yarns.
Ideal as end rings to stop extrusion of softer packing in combination sets.
Handles water, oil, gasoline, and other fluids.
Available by the spool or as pre-cut rings.

| Style # | Description | Construction | Service | Temperature | pH | Shaft Speed | Pressure (psig) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 811 | All pressure resistance, lead foil properties, and service applications of Style 851 without a core. Due to low friction, will not score or wear equipment. | Twisted Lead Foil | Superior boiler feed pump packing and as end rings in combination with a variety of packing. Against water, oil, gasoline, and other fluids on steel or cast iron rods, shafts, or plungers. | +500°F | 4-10 | 1000 fpm | 1500+ |

Frequently Asked Questions
All Mechanical PackingsWhy use metallic packing instead of a braided yarn?
Metal foil carries heat away from the shaft and holds its shape under pressure that would extrude a yarn packing. On boiler feed pumps and high pressure plungers, a metallic packing lasts longer and protects the equipment. It is also the standard end ring material for keeping softer body rings from extruding past the gland.
Will lead foil packing damage my shaft?
No. Lead is softer than steel or cast iron and has a low coefficient of friction, so Style 811 conforms to the shaft rather than cutting into it. That is why it is specified where scoring is a concern.
How is Style 811 used in a combination set?
A typical set places one or two rings of Style 811 at the bottom and top of the stuffing box with braided, flexible graphite, or PTFE rings in between. The metallic end rings stop extrusion and dissipate heat while the body rings do the sealing.
Are other metallic packings available?
Yes. In addition to Style 811, Anchor Seals Inc. can supply metallic foil packings with cores, aluminum and copper foil constructions, and combination sets with graphite or PTFE. Send us the service conditions and we will recommend the right build.
