Kevlar & Soot Blower Packing

DuPont KEVLAR aramid packing for abrasive, high pressure pump and paper mill service, and Inconel encapsulated carbon die-formed rings built for the rigorous demands of soot blowers.

Aramid fiber is the answer when abrasion and pressure wear out ordinary packing. KEVLAR yarn has seven to ten times the breaking strength of asbestos, resists abrasion better, and is lint and dust free. Braided with PTFE and a high temperature lubricant, it makes a multi-service packing for pulp and paper, marine, sewage, and chemical plants.

For soot blowers, Anchor Seals Inc. stocks Style 8140 die-formed rings: carbon yarn encapsulated with Inconel alloy wire and braided over a carbon yarn core, dimensionally stable at high temperature and rated to 4200 psig.

Why KEVLAR and Soot Blower Packing

KEVLAR yarn has 7 to 10 times the breaking strength of asbestos and resists abrasion better.

Lint and dust free, so it will not contaminate paper stock or process fluid.

PTFE impregnation and high temperature lubricant make Style 1335 a true multi-service packing.

Style 8140 Inconel encapsulated carbon rings are dimensionally stable to +1200°F in steam.

Die-formed 8140 rings install directly into soot blower stuffing boxes and hold 4200 psig.

Excellent chemical and solvent resistance on both styles.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

All Mechanical Packings

What makes KEVLAR packing different from other synthetic packings?

KEVLAR is an aramid fiber with exceptional tensile strength and abrasion resistance. In a packing it holds up against slurries, high pressure, and abrasive media that would shred acrylic or cotton yarns, while staying lint free. It is the standard choice for pulp and paper stock pumps and abrasive sewage service.

Is Style 1335 hard on shafts and sleeves?

Aramid is a hard fiber, so Style 1335 is PTFE impregnated and lubricated to keep friction low. On hardened or sleeved shafts it runs well to 1900 fpm. For very soft shafts, or for the highest speeds, ask our engineers about combination sets with aramid corners and softer body yarns.

What is a soot blower packing?

Soot blowers inject high pressure steam into boiler tube banks to clear ash. The lance stuffing box sees high temperature steam, high pressure, and abrasive fly ash. Style 8140 die-formed rings use Inconel encapsulated carbon yarn to stay dimensionally stable and seal under those conditions to 4200 psig.

Can Anchor Seals Inc. form 8140 rings to my soot blower?

Yes. Send us the lance diameter, stuffing box bore and depth, and the number of rings, and we will supply die-formed rings sized for the box. Style 1335 is available by the spool or as pre-cut rings.
